Google API Search Limits

Empower uses Google's search engine to allow users to search for resources such as YouTube videos to include in instruction. 

Google has imposed limits on the number of searches a given site can perform without incurring any additional charges. 
These limits are per day:
100 Text or Image searches
100 YouTube Searches
Please note, these are Google's limits, policies and prices, not Empower's.

Q: When does the quota reset?
A: Check the quota page in google developer console. Most of them reset at midnight Pacific Standard Time

When that limit is exceeded, the following error message will be displayed upon attempting a search in Empower:

Increasing the Quota

To overcome this issue, the client organization (school district) will need to increase the quotas in their Google Developer Account. The process for this is outlined below. It will require updating billing information with an account that can be charged for the extra costs incurred by extra searches.

Pricing

Custom Search JSON API provides 100 search queries per day for free. If you need more, you may sign up for billing in the API Console.
Additional requests cost $5 per 1000 queries, up to 10k queries per day.
If you need more than 10k queries per day and your Programmable Search Engine searches 10 sites or fewer, you may be interested in the Custom Search Site Restricted JSON API, which does not have a daily query limit.

Accessing your Google Development Account

Upon request, Empower can provide login credentials for the Google Developer Account which is associated with your instance of Empower. This will be in the form of a gmail account and password. 

Steps to Increase the Quota

  1. Log in with the account provided by Empower (upon request)
  2. Navigate to the Google API Console
  3. Select Library in the left hand menu
     
  4. At the bottom of the page, under the Other category, select Custom Search API


  5. Open Custom Search API Library
  6. Select the Enable (or Manage) Button
  7. Select or Create the Empower Project 
  8. Select Quotas tab in the left hand menu
  9. Unfold the Queries section


  10. Click on the pencil icon at the bottom of the page next to "Queries per day"


  11. Select Apply for a higher quota
  12. Here you will fill out a form. You may not know the answers to some of these questions. We have given the answers at this link. You can copy them from there
  13. Press Submit
Adding Billing Information
You may need to add billing information. You should be prompted during the process, but if not, you can use this link. Fill out the billing details.
