Eligibility is often an indicator of progress and effort that schools need to use to determine if student should be able to participate in additional school activities. Although it has traditionally been associated with athletics, schools are able to use it for a wide variety of other purposes as well.
Empower can provide an eligibility report that is based on multiple data points. Manual teacher recommendations and overall course pacing can me combined in multiple ways to create the most accurate way to flag students who are currently deemed ineligible, and who may need more focused attention from teachers and the school leadership team.
Many schools and districts that use Empower have found that athletic organizations are able to understand how eligibility is monitored in a Competency-based System, using real achievement data, evidence of progress, and teacher input. Quite often, the way eligibility is reported out from Empower will be all that is needed to meet a state's eligibility requirements. If additional requirements do exist, the default Pacing Plus system of eligibility is flexible and can be adjusted to meet your needs.
Manual Eligibility
Teachers enter eligibility scores for students on a weekly or other predetermined schedule.
Setting Eligibility Manually
The Eligibility Tool can be found on the Reporting Tab.
This tool is hidden by default. Request it be turned on in a Helpdesk ticket.
With this tool, teachers can view a list of students week to week in order to set their eligibility score.
This score may be based on behavior or academic effort or progress. This is a local decision. If you develop a rubric for this, that can be attached in the tool. Attach your rubric to a helpdesk ticket and ask that it be loaded here and we will wire it up for you.
In this tool, teachers simply adjust the scores based on the rubric and hit submit. This score and the student's other teacher's scores can be viewed in the Eligibility Report (see below) to determine if the student is or is not eligible for participation that week.
3.0 = Eligible
< 3.0 = ineligible.
Pace-based Eligibility
It is possible for eligibility to be automatically calculated based on a student's pacing notifications. Schools can determine how many courses can be identified as "Behind Pace" before a student is ineligible. Let our Helpdesk know this threshold and we can adjust how Empower calculates.
This method requires teachers to be consistent with their scoring practices to student pace is accurate.
Eligibility Plus
Eligibility is automatically calculated based on a combination of student pacing notifications and eligibility scores that teachers manually give to their students. Schools can determine the exact triggers that would cause a student to be identified as ineligible. To configure this, talk to your Empower representative.
Running an Eligibility Admin Report to Track Entries
The Eligibility Admin Report can be used to check that teachers have entered eligibility scores for the week.
This report will bring up the filtered set of students' eligibility statuses for each of their classes for the selected week. This information can be used to decide if the student is eligible or not.
